What are the benefits of being in band? ¿Cuáles son los beneficios de estar en banda?

Your child will learn skills such as creativity, artistic expression, discipline, responsibility, and time-management. Studies show that students involved in music often do better in their core classes! They will also be part of an award-winning program at the school and make life-long friends; band is a family!

What instruments are in band? ¿Qué instrumentos hay en banda?

Flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and percussion.

How do I know what instrument my child will play? ¿Cómo sé cuál instrumento tocará mi estudiante?

Your child will come and have an instrument interview with a band director. They are trained professionals who will help them pick which instrument they will most likely be successful on based on set criteria and physical attributes. The date and time will be given to you later this semester!

Su estudiante tendrá que venir a una entrevista de instrumento con un director de banda. Son profesionales capacitados que te ayudarán a elegir el instrumento en el que posiblemente sobresaldrá basado en criterios establecidos y atributos físicos. What happens if your child does not come to the Instrument Interview night? ¿Qué pasa si mi estudiante no va a la entrevista de instrumentos?

Students must have an instrument interview with a band director to help place them in the correct class. Certain instruments will fill up fast, so make sure that you come on the date that we give; if you don’t come to the scheduled instrument interview, your child may not get to play the instrument they first wanted to!

Estudiante debe de tener una entrevista de instrumento con un director de banda para ayudarle a colocarte en la clase correcta. Ciertos instrumentos se agotan rápidamente, así que asegúrate de asistir en la fecha mencionada arriba para asegurar tu espacio. Si no vienes en esa fecha, puede ser que no toques el instrumento que quieres o incluso que no formes parte de banda.

How do I get an instrument? ¿Cómo obtengo un instrumento?

This depends on the instrument your child is selected to play. Some instruments are rented from music companies while others are rented through the school. We will give you all the details once we’ve selected which instrument your child will play at the instrument interview.

Yes! We will give you an information sheet of district recommended instruments the night of your interview. We will explain the rationale the night of the instrument interview.

Is there homework in band? ¿Hay tareas en banda?

Yes, but band homework is FUN! Your child will be learning music and will be playing an instrument! We teach that hard work leads to success, so we expect students to take home their instrument every day. Successful students typically practice about 20 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week.

What required activities are there outside of the school day for band? ¿Qué actividades obligatorias hay fuera del día escolar para banda?

Part of being in band is performing. Due to this, we will have about five rehearsals after school throughout the year, two concerts, and two contests that they will be required to attend. All of these dates will be given to parents and students at the beginning of the school year. These activities will affect grades.

Are there financial commitments to being in band? ¿Hay compromisos financieros para estar en banda?

Band does come with some financial commitments. Students are expected to have a working, quality, director-approved instrument with the required supplies. We strongly recommend that instruments are rented rather than purchased (more details will be given when we have selected your instrument). In addition, students will need to pay a $20 band fee that covers the cost of their binder, supplies, shirt, and music.

***It is the philosophy of the GPMS Band to not turn away any student due to financial difficulty or hardships. We have worked with many families in the past and will gladly work with you if there is an issue. We just ask that you communicate with us.***

Banda viene con algunos compromisos financieros. Se espera que los estudiantes tengan un instrumento que funcione correctamente, de calidad, aprobado por el director con los materiales necesarios. Recomendamos que los instrumentos se alquilan en lugar de comprarse (se proporcionarán más detalles cuando hayamos seleccionado tu instrumento). Además, los estudiantes deberán pagar una cuota de banda de $20 que cubre el costo de su cartapacio, materiales, camiseta y música.

What if my child wants to be in sports/cheer/dance/choir/etc.? ¿Qué pasa si mi estudiante quiere estar en deportes / ser porrista / bailar / estar en el coro / etc.?

They can still do band! Some of our best students do many activities. We work with all of the sponsors to share our students.

What if my child is unsure about being in band? ¿Qué pasa si mi estudiante no está seguro de estar en banda?

Please remember that 6th grade is the only year you can sign-up to join band. As mentioned above, if financial struggles are a concern, don’t hesitate to talk to us – we are here to help. Remember, they can also participate in other activities.
